Glossary of Crafting Terms This glossary is designed to give you a quick idea about some of the terminology you might come across. It is by no means a complete list of everything, but rather an ongoing list that will grow as we add more items! Acidfree Acidfree products are essential for scrapbooking and any project you wish to keep for any length of time. Acidfree means that no acid was present at the manufacture stage. Acidfree papers and materials can become acidic with time which causes the discolouration. Basically the more pure the cellulose is in the paper, the more permanent it will be. Archival The use of archival products means that they are safe for preserving, i.e. scrapbooks. They have a high resistance to ageing. Bleeding This happens when too much ink is taken in by the paper and it causes a feathery edge to images. Bone Folder Generally made of plastic, this tool is pointed at one end and roiunded off at the other end. It is used for scoring and folding card and paper. Brayer A rubber roller that is used to apply inks to surfaces. Collage Bits and pieces that are glued to a background. Cropping Trimming a photograph for a scrapbook page. You can cut away parts of the picture that you don’t want or make the picture a particular shape. Don’t crop original photographs that you cannot reproduce! Scan them or photocopy them and use these. Die Cuts Cut shapes made using one of the many die cutting machines such as QuicKutz, Big Shot, CriCut etc. Great for embellishing cards, scrapbook pages and many other paper crafted projects. Dye Based Ink Pads quick drying ink pads that are not normally colourfast. Usually water based. Embossing Powder Powders used for the embossing process. They are available in metallic and nonmetallic finishes. Gesso An opaque base that is painted onto a surface to prepare it for further decoration. It has a chalky base to it. Gum Arabic A powder form of plant resin that is used to bind colour pigments. It also adds a glossy finish and it improves the flow of paint. Interference Can be as powder pigments or as ink pads and inks. Made with particles of mica or metal oxides that cause an iridescence or lustre. Journalling These are the written parts of a scrapbook, the parts that tell the story on the page. It is a vital way of recording your family history and will become precious over time. Layout How you plan and position your work, whether cards or scrapbook pages. Marvy Brush Markers Water based brush markers that can be used to add colour directly to the surface of a rubber stamp. They remain wet for a while, so colours can be mixed on the stamp and then stamped out onto card. Well over 100 colours in the range. Marvy Le Plume Pens Double ended water based pens in the same colour range as the Marvy Brush Markers. They are best used for adding colour to a stamped image. They have a medium brush tip and a fine point end. Mixed Media A mixing of several media, such as paint, stamping, paper etc., to create a piece of artwork. Opaque A surface that doesn’t transmit light, i.e it cannot be seen through. Page Protectors These are used to place your scrapbook pages into, to protect them from fingers etc. They are seethrough, so you don’t need to remove the page to view it! Permanent Inks These provide a good layer of colour and leave clear impressions. They are usually acidfree and resistant to fading. They work best on nonglossy surfaces as the ink sits on the card, rather than soaking into it. It is perfect for embossing as it remains wet long enough to add the embossing powder. Available in a huge range of colours and in metallics. pH This refers to the acidic or alkaline content in paper etc. 1 pH is a very high acid content and around 14 pH is a very high alkaline content. A neutral content is 7 pH. PVA Known as Polyvynyl Acetate, this is an archival adhesive that is white in colour. It is transparent when dry and is water soluble. Translucent This is between transparent and opaque. You can see through it but not clearly. Vellum In crafting terms a translucent, heavyweight paper. Watercolour Coloured pigments that are mixed with gum Arabic. They are normally transparent and remain water soluble once dry. Wood Block The wood mounting for a rubber stamp.
